Hubberton Hike 56 - Bretton Country Park

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Fifty-Sixth of our “Hubberton Hikers Hikes” is now scheduled for Saturday November 17th 2007. The hike is planned to start at 11am from Bretton Country Park. The hike is approximately 4.5 miles long and will take about 2 to 3 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a drink and possibly some food at Heathers house on the way home afterwards.

Directions: It lies a few miles east of Emley Moor and shouldn't cause any difficulties. You can do Huddersfield - A642 - A637 and you'll find it near West Bretton, about a mile short of the M1. Or you can go on the M1 to J38 and its a mile or so back up the A637 towards Huddersfield. OS Landranger map 110 recommended. Head for the bottom car park (nearest the motorway exit).

From the car park go through a gate, walk along a tarmac path and turn right on reaching a track. After a few yards turn left, at a coloured post, and take the worn grassy path across the parkland, dotted with sculptures by Henry Moore, towards Bretton Hall. Later, keep beside the River Dearne on the left, beyond is the lake and over to the right the estate Chapel, built in 1744, can be seen. At the far end of this area of parkland go through a gate and continue along a tarmac path. Follow Dearne Way signs across grass to a tarmac drive, turn right along it towards the college buildings, turn left along a track and shortly turn right across grass to the early 19th century Camellia House, (this is the building with steps in front). Take the tarmac path beyond to pass through the Sculpture Park car park and continue up through the park, viewing the various items of sculpture, to eventually reach the top vehicle entrance to the park. Cross a tarmac drive just beyond the entrance and turn left along a parallel track. After passing through a metal gate, the track bears left and heads gently downhill to go through an iron gate. On this descent there are attractive views ahead over the Dearne Valley and the rolling country beyond. Keep ahead crossing the River Dearne, then passing between two lakes, going through another iron gate and continuing by a fence on the right. At a stile on the right, turn sharp left across the grass to a stile and red-topped post, climb the stile and now follow a series of red-topped posts across fields to eventually reach a stile.

The rest of the Walk can be obtained from Leader if desired before the date, otherwise follow “YOUR LEADER” on the day.

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

A free sculpture exhibition is the main feature of this unusual and interesting walk through the adjacent Bretton Country Park and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, formerly the grounds of a country estate. In addition there are pleasant views across the landscaped parkland to the lakes, formed by damming the River Dearne, and the Dearne Valley. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
