The Forty-Ninth of our “Hubberton Hikers Hikes” is now scheduled for Saturday March 24th 2007. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the Village of Rylstone, by the pond. The hike is approximately 6 miles long and will take about 4 to 4.5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a meal/drink @ either Henri’s bistro Skipton or the Tempest Arms when the hike is completed.

Directions: Start with Keighley - Skipton. Then get onto the Grassington Road (B6265).
Rylstone is about 5 miles north of Skipton on the B6265, about halfway to Grassington.
Park where you can.
Across the main road from the pond a lane rises past the Manor House to St. Peter’s church. Just beyond, a rough track turns south, and the route crosses the fields far below the impending moorland skyline of the walk. A walled lane is briefly joined to lead the short way to an access point to the moor. A splendid track climbs the reedy pasture, past an island plantation to reach a corner of the moor, and the access area proper. The track rises through dense bracken cloaking innumerable sunken ways. As it starts to level out, a green way heads off to the north. This quickly points to a thinner path slanting up out of the bracken and beneath the tumble of rocks above. At a wall corner the great heathery expanse of Rylstone Fell rolls into the heart of the high moor. The old wall, meanwhile, leads the path and its sweeping views north to Rylstone Cross. Erected to celebrate the Paris treaty of 1813, Rylstone Cross stands atop a high grit stone base, and is a prominent landmark from the Skipton-Grassington road. The view embraces much of the country linking Aire and Wharfe, backed by a lofty horizon featuring Ingleborough, Fountains Fell, Birks Fell, Yockenthwaite Moor, Buckden Pike and Great Whernside. The next objective is the Cracoe Fell obelisk, and there are two ways of reaching it. The traditional walk is on a well-worn undulating path on the moor side of the wall. The more intrepid might remain on the virtually pathless edge side of the wall, where far superior views replace the moorland atmosphere. The rest of the Walk can be obtained from Leader if desired before the date, otherwise follow “YOUR LEADER” on the day. |
ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!
A simple fell walk along a disjointed grit stone edge. Much of the walk is on access land. Dogs are NOT allowed on the access area. Hovering above their respective villages, Rylstone and Cracoe Fells form the northwestern corner of heathery Barden Moor. Each has its own distinctive monument perched on the grit stone edges of the all-embracing moor. Familiar landmarks from the busy Skipton-Grassington road, they can be easily linked by this memorable stroll. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
