Hubberton Hike 46 - Thornton Moor

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Forty-Sixth of our “Hubberton Hikers Hikes” is now scheduled for Saturday December 16th 2006. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the Post Office in Oxenhope. The hike is approximately 8 miles long and will take about 3.5 to 4 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a drink in either Oxenhope or Hebden Bridge when the hike is completed.

Oxenhope is on the A6033 Keighley Road from Hebden Bridge... You all know where Oxenhope is! Park where you can, we're meeting at the post office.

The walk itself begins about 800 meters south of the railway station in Lower Town by the post office. Walk along the road, passing to the right of the post office and left of a mill building. Where the road bends left uphill, keep ahead (also uphill) along Jew Lane. At a fork take the right-hand lower lane and continue along a tarmac track that heads downhill, passing in front of houses. The track now continues as a rough track that crosses a stream and heads uphill, passing to the right of a house. Turn left over a stone stile, continue up to a track at the Bronte way sign, cross over and take the track ahead, which keeps above Leeming reservoir. At a fork take the left-hand track, passing through a gate, and go through another gate, by a Bronte Way sign, where the track curves right. Turn left here to continue along a grassy path, by a wire fence and wall on the left, climbing several stone stiles and descending to cross a footbridge over a stream near the end of the reservoir. Walk across a field, bearing slightly left to keep beside trees and above a stream on the left, cross a footbridge over the stream and continue uphill, by a wire fence on the left and now above the stream on the right. Climb a stone stile, continue uphill across open moorland and, where the wall on the leftturns to the left, keep straight ahead, making for a ladder-stile. Pass over a stone stile before it, then climb the ladder-stile, cross a channel and continue steadily uphill, at first by a wall on the left and later between low, broken down walls. Follow the direction of Bronte Way marker-posts first to the left, then to the right and later to the left again, finally curving right to reach a track by a footpath post.

The rest of the Walk can be obtained from Leader if desired before the date, otherwise follow “YOUR LEADER” on the day.

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

A steady climb leads past Leeming Reservoir and Thornton moor reservoir on to open moorland, and the route continues across the bare and windswept expanses of Thornton and Ovenden moors, passing a wind farm. There is much splendid moorland walking with extensive views over a wide area of the South Pennines. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
