Hubberton Hike 40 - Simons Seat

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Fortieth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday April 22nd 2006. The hike is planned to start at 11am from The Cavendish Pavilion Car Park, Bolton Abbey. The hike is approximately 9.5 miles long and will take about 4 to 5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a drink and dinner at Henri's Bistro Skipton when the hike is completed.

Directions: From Keighley, take A629 to Skipton, continuing along the bypass to the 2nd Skipton roundabout. Take the A65 towards Leeds / Bradford / Harrogate, picking up signposts for Bolton Abbey. Follow the signs onto the A59, past Bolton Abbey Station, and left onto the B6160 to approach Bolton Abbey. Proceed to the main car park on the nearside of the village. Parking fee is understood to be £5.

The walk itself begins by following a path across the wooden bridge opposite the pavilion and continuing upstream. Just up the hill at Waterfall Cottage, an access notice marks the beginning of a concession path. Across a parkland pasture with its hoary oaks, a track makes for posforth Gill in the valley of Desolation. While the main path turns to run along the rim of the drop to the beck, a branch down to it repays with a close up view of a fine waterfall. The beck might be crossed by a footbridge and the west bank followed upstream. The usual path remains on the east bank to cross by a tiny footbridge a little further up. All to soon the onward route rises away from the beck, but first another brief diversion runs upstream to enjoy an equally lovely waterfall. The main path meanwhile rises into Laund Pasture Plantation. A wide track leads rapidly to the top end of the trees to gain the open moor. The broad track heads directly away, and soon drops down to ford Great Agill Beck before facing a short, steep section. As a stone "lunch" table is reached, Truckle Crags and more distantly Simon's Seat come into view. When the main shooters track swings off right, a broad path runs on to cross the headwaters of the beck. Swinging past the great boulders of Truckle Crags, the much larger grouping of rocks atop Simon's Seat is now just a minute away.

The rest of the Walk can be obtained from Leader if desired before the date, otherwise follow "YOUR LEADER" on the day.

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

This walk climbs from the valley to the heights of Simon's Seat. It is a "classic" Wharfedale walk, on the eastern side of The Bolton Abbey estate. A superb expedition through colourful country to a grand airy top. Excellent paths throughout and a complementing riverside return. Much of the walk is on access land. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
