Hubberton Hike 39 - Kirkburton

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Thirty-Ninth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday March 18th 2006. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the car park by Kirkburton church. The hike is approximately 12 miles long and will take about 4.5 to 5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a drink when the hike is completed.

Directions: From Huddersfield, take the Sheffield road (A629), taking the right fork after a couple of miles as signposted. Follow the road roughly a further 3 miles to Highburton. Take left turn onto the B6116, and follow the road about a mile into Kirkburton. The church is on the right towards the far end of the village.

The walk itself begins by turning back on ourselves and veering left from the church along the path in an Easterly direction. The path is well defined most of the way so it can easily be followed. Keep straight ahead with the village of Highwood to our right, until we arrive in the hamlet of Roydhouse. Continue across the road and through a field where Baildon Dyke comes into view on your left. Keeping the Dyke on your left, a wooded area will come into view ahead of you. Bear left of the woods and follow the path around about 4 fields before turning right at the end of the fourth field and seeing the hamlet of Baildon place, which we will walk through. The track gradually descends now in a Southeasterly direction where a number of roads now have to be crossed/walked under. Upon reaching the third road (B6116) we turn right and follow it down passed Shelley School before turning east (Left) again crossing a field before coming across another lane. Cross the lane straight across and follow an un-surfaced path that runs parallel with a disused railway line before going through a small tunnel/railway arch where once again we will enter fields. The path takes us to another road where we will turn left passing Hardenley farm, where just after passing we must take note of a signpost on our left, which is pointing in the direction of Upper Cumberworth. Continue along a cart track from the road passing through woods all but for a short distance, then through fields on the well-defined path until we reach the road that leads into Upper Cumberworth. We follow the path straight across this road being careful not to be tempted into the village for a "swift half".

The rest of the Walk can be obtained from Leader if desired before the date, otherwise follow "YOUR LEADER" on the day.

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

A pleasant circular walk in the Pennine foothills in and around the Huddersfield area. The walk consists of a roughly circular walk with Emley moor TV/Radio transmitter in the centre. The walk takes us through gently undulating farmland and rolling countryside, with NO steep hills. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
