The Thirty-eighth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday February 25th 2005. The hike is planned to start at 11am from St Peters Gate Walsden, (behind the Post Office). The hike is approximately 7.5 miles long and will take about 4 to 5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a drink at the Stubbing Wharf pub when the hike is completed.

Directions: From Halifax, take the Burnley Road (A646) to Todmorden. At the
roundabout turn left towards Littleborough (A6033) roughly 2 miles into Walsden.
The post office is on the main road a few hundred yards beyond Walsden railway
station.
The walk itself begins by following St Peters gate across the Rochdale canal at Travis Mill Lock, climbing with it to North Hollingworth Farm. Keep left in front of the whitewashed cottage to follow the sign-posted Salter's Rake bridleway north. The paved track dips into a wet, rushy hollow above Henshaw wood before climbing out on to the open moor, where there are good views back to Walsden and Ramsden Wood. Leave the track by a cairn at Rake End for an intermittently faint path climbing east across rough grassy slopes. The new path gains confidence as it gains height. Its grassy cloak has camouflaged the Gaddings dam, but suddenly the walker stumbles across it and climbs the stone staircase to its causeway. Follow the northern causeways to pass a second reservoir. This one is dry and covered with moorland grasses. Beyond it, the path follows the line of a concrete drain with the Langfield Edge drawing closer from the left. Great gritstone crags overlook some quarries and a network of old miners tracks climb from the villages of Lumbutts and Mankinholes, which bask in fields below. The path traverses some wet, rushy ground as it circumvents a craggy ravine. It continues along the edge, climbing to the north of Jeremy Hill. Keep with the path until you see a huge rock to the right capped by a pile of stones; this is Coldwell Hill. Descend northeast from the summit to meet the bold Pennine Way path, which continues along the edge to pass the Withins gate. The rest of the Walk can be obtained from Leader if desired before the date, otherwise follow "YOUR LEADER" on the day. |
ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!
This walk climbs from the valley farms to the high moors of Langfield Common. It is a "classic" Calderdale walk, on the quiet side of Stoodley Pike. The craggy high point of Coldwell Hill is just 100 metres from the busy Pennine Way, but the wayfarers only have eyes for the pike and the route ahead. A steady but unrelenting climb to the moorland plateau on paved causey tracks and rough, grassy moorland. Good paths along the moorland edge followed by field paths and canal towpath. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
