Directions: From Hebden Bridge follow the Keighley Road (A6033) for nearly a mile,
then take the left turn signposted to Hardcastle Craggs. Follow this road to the
main Hardcastle Craggs car park (New Bridge, near Midgehole). See the attached
MAP (click here) to find your way from
here.
The walk itself begins by turning right from the Bungalow along the path, follow it down to the river, up and along to Gibson Mill. Turn left around the far side of the mill on a wide track passing the old millpond, often frequented by dippers, mallards and dragonflies. The track gradually climbs past Hardcastle Crags, large outcrops of millstone grit, camouflaged y vegetation. Take the right fork in the tracks beyond the crags. It climbs out of the woods and onto pastureland, where it meets a lane linking the high hill farms of Shackleton and Wadsworth Moors. Turn left and follow its lofty course to the little hamlet of Walshaw farm, part of the Savile Estate. From Walshaw the route aims to leave the farmlands and head for the moors. It does so on a courtesy path climbing North on a walled track that turns left for New Cote Farm. Just beyond the turn, a signpost ("To Walshaw Dean") points north, and the path climbs a grassy bank to continue along a cart track from New Cote, which passes some mixed woodland to reach the open moor beyond a stile. The meandering broad track from here onwards is out of bounds, for shooters only. The rest of the Walk can be obtained from Leader if desired before the date, otherwise follow "YOUR LEADER" on the day. |
ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!
Hebden Dale sometimes referred to as Hardcastle Crags, cuts and twists its way through high moors northwest of Hebden Bridge. Bursting with trees, shrubs and wild flowers, it makes a fine entrée to the high moorland traverse that follows. This walk uses the Dean Gate permissive path across Wadsworth Moor. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
