Hubberton Hike 34 - Saddleworth Edges

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Thirty-Fourth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday October 15th 2005. The hike is planned to start at 11am from Binn Green car park close to Dove Stone Reservoir. The hike is approximately 9 miles long and will take about 4.5 to 5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a Meal and a drink at the pub by Denshaw crossroads when the hike is completed.

The walk itself begins from the car park heading Southwest down the lane at the bottom of the Car Park and, close to its exit at the main road, turn left to descend the path through the woods. Turn right along a path parallel with Dove Stone Reservoir. Go through the Dove Stone car park and turn right along Bradbury's Lane, passing New Barn, a large loomhouse. Turn left opposite the 19th Century terraced mill cottages of Hey Top through a gap in the wall and over a stile to climb the hillside ahead on the west bank of the stream. On entering the pine plantation cross to the east bank's of the stream then turn left along a narrow path, Intake lane. Through a gate at the forest edge, the path continues across boulder-strewn slopes to ford a stream by some stepping Stones before entering Chew Piece Plantation. Through the trees the views gradually unfold. Climb a wooden stile at the far edge of chew piece, follow the path east across rams Clough, heading into chews brook's ravine. Some steps lead the path down to cross the brook on a footbridge before it climbs the far banks to chew reservoir's supply road. This tarmac road climbs steadily to the shoulder of the moor and chew dam. Continue along the reservoir's southern shores on the course of an old railway. Continue east on peaty path till you reach Pennine way path at Laddow rocks. Return to reservoir and its supply road on same path as used on approach to laddow rocks until you reach the reservoir. Abandon road just short of a disused quarry for sketchy track heading west. Trace firmer ground near to the edge, passing numerous strange shape boulders. Continue past bramley's cot a former unusual shooting hut built into a cliff edge. A short distance to the north the path passes the cairn on fox stone, a memorial to two young climbers killed in the Dolomites in 1972. The route now enters the crags finest scenery of the day. Another reservoir yeoman hey is now in view to the north. Beyond the great dove stone rocks the path veers right (east) to cross the ash way gap. It is quite a circuitous but unavoidable detour. Ford dove stone Clough by a small cataract where the path continues at the edge of the moorland to the west of the ash way stone. A well defined track abandons the plateau's edge and descends beneath the ashway rocks the right of way is shown as zigzagging down to the weirs at the clough bottom but in reality a clear track continues along the grassy flanks to the water company road close the yeoman hey dam cross the dam and turn left along the road through conifer plantations then right following the signposted path back to the Binn green car park.
