Hubberton Hike - Grassington

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Thirtieth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday June 25th 2005. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the village of Conistone, which is situated 3 miles from Kettlewell (Skipton side) down a minor road. This is a neat compact village with a triangular green and a Norman Church. The hike is approximately 11 miles long and will take about 4 to 4.5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a pub meal and a drink at the Devonshire Arms public house in the village of Grassington when the hike is completed.

The walk itself begins from the T-junction by the green, where you take the little road heading past the old schoolhouse towards the hillside. The road carries straight on as a track between the houses at the end of which you go through a gate for the path up the hill. Beware, as here there is a short scramble up rocks as you reach a dried up bed of a stream that it is on a similar scale to Gordale Scar without the water. You emerge from the gorge to a narrow valley between scree-covered slopes. The gradient eases and walking is comfortable on a broad, grass track that runs through convoluted hills which look as if they have been deliberately and neatly folded. Continuing along this path we will have another short scramble and climb a few ladder stiles before joining another wide track that is actually the Dales way. This is very much Limestone country and as we walk along we will have extensive views over Wharfedale and the crag edged Kilnsey crag/moor. The walk takes us through Yarnbury and along to the village of Hebden where LIGHT refreshments may be had. From Hebden we then follow the scenic part of the Hike along the riverbank, passing Linton Falls and Grassington along the way. We leave the river at Grassington and skirt Grass wood before returning to our cars at Conistone. After the hike some people may be interested to call in at Kilnsey trout farm which not only sell fresh Rainbow/Smoked trout but lots of other game and chutneys/jams etc.

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

A fairly long walk including some hilly terrain with a couple of short scrambles near the start, with flat terrain later. PLEASE take note of “ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE” and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
