Hubberton Hike - Whalley

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Twenty-eighth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday April 23rd 2005. The hike is planned to start at 11am from spring wood car park and picnic site Whalley, just off the A671. The hike is approximately 11 miles long and will take about 4 to 4.5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a pub meal and a drink at a public house either in the village of Whalley or on route home when the hike is completed.

The signposted footpath begins from the roadside about 20 metres south of the car park and skirts the golf course next to spring wood. Cross the footbridge at the top end of the wood and follow the faint path heading northeast to a stile at the top left hand corner of the field. After crossing another stile a few yards further, the path turns right, tracing the northern boundary walls of Clerk Hill (a large dwelling). It then passes between two gateposts to a track climbing east to a metalled lane. Turn left along the lane, which degenerates into a track beyond Wiswell Moor farm. Follow the track on the edge of rough Mooreland high above Sabden Village. Looking down on the verdant Sabden valley it is difficult to imagine the sinister tales of witchcraft that abound in these parts (Pendle Hill). The track emerges at the crest of the high road near the Nick of Pendle. Turn left along the road past the well springs pub and the Pendle dry Ski run before turning off on a narrow footpath that continues north across rough Mooreland. It crosses a brook on a small footbridge close to the stone-built Howcroft Barn in the shadow of Pendle Hill's northern slopes. The rest of this walk will have to be DICTATED to Johnny Lord so he will be ABLE to lead us safely back to Skipton as there is not enough space left to give full details! SORRY.

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

A long, but moderately easy circular walk starting with a climb over Mooreland, and then heading across pastureland on field paths and lanes. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of “ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE” and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
