Hubberton Hike 27 - Dovestones

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Twenty-Seventh of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday March 19th 2005. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the Car Park by Dovestones Reservoir. The hike is approximately 11/11.5 miles long and will take about 4.5 to 5 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to take a sandwich and a drink. A hearty meal can be enjoyed at a nearby public house when the hike is completed or if they wish to they may get off home. Take the Oldham Road (A672) from Sowerby Bridge until you reach the crossroads by the village of Denshaw. Take a DIAGONAL Left here to Delph. At Delph turn Left onto the A6052 to Greenfield. When you come to the T-junction take the left turn on the A635 for approx 2 miles where you will see the "P" Car Park sign on your right. Park here at Dovestones Reservoir car Park and await your Leader!

This walk is NOT a circular walk so it will require some volunteers to drive their car further up the A635 to park in the car Park where our walk will meet the road at its end. Other volunteers who have followed them to the Car Park will then bring them back to the start.
We set off in a Southeasterly direction from the car Park crossing the Reservoir at its intake. The Mooreland path is followed around to Chew Reservoir and then beyond until we reach the Pennine Way. The Pennine way is then followed up and over Black Hill. Lovely views can be taken in all along this route and at no better place than the top of Black Hill (weather permitting). It can be quite a slog if the heather is wet and boggy as this part of the Pennine Way is notorious for being a Peat bog. The route then takes us away from the Pennine Way at Holme Edge. For those who feel they can put in the EXTRA mile or two, the Pennine Way can be followed until the A635 is met at Wessenden Head. For those or all of us that take the shorter route, we follow the path until we meet the A635 and the Car Park where the cars will be. The idea for this walk was born for the training we have to put in for the Lyke Wake Walk. Extra mileage can be achieved on the day if the desire is shown to Leader and his IMMEDIATE crewmember!
It is recommended that a few more sandwiches be added to your lunch boxes as the Mooreland can be hard to walk through and therefore a lot of energy is used.

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

The terrain is of Mooreland Grass and Peat with well-worn paths. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather. Good STOUT waterproof boots must be worn!

A provisional MAP of the walk is available HERE. Apologies for the poor quality of the map; a better version will be made available prior to the walk. (The page includes a 46Kb image, which will be be slightly slow open on some computers).
