Hubberton Hike - Otley / Chevin

YORKIEBOYS YORKSHIRE HIKES

The Twenty-Sixth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday February 19th 2005. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the Car Park in Otley. Car parking is spread about the village so when you find parking, meet by the ornamental park gates just below the bridge over the River Wharfe. The hike is approximately 8/8.5 miles long and will take about 3.5 to 4 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a drink at a nearby public house when the hike is completed where people can decide if they wish to get off home or stay around for an evening meal.

We set off through the ornamental park gates just below the bridge in Otley and head off in a southwesterly direction on a tarmac path at the side of the River Wharfe, which curves left and proceeds through a car park to a main road. Turn right and follow the road as it bears left (Piper Lane) and turn left along West Chevin Road. After crossing the bypass, the road bends right. At a public footpath sign turn left up steps and walk along an uphill path by a wire fence on the left to commence the climb to The Chevin.
Continue steeply up between bushes bracken and heather, later bearing slightly right to enter woodland. The path bends left and continues uphill towards a stile. Before reaching this stile turn left along a path that keeps just below the top edge of the woodland, passing several large rocky outcrops - later the path keeps by a wall on the right. At a crossroads keep ahead, now with a wire fence on the right, shortly to emerge from the woodland and continue along a ridge path from which there are fine views over lower Wharfedale and to the right over Airedale. The path passes Yorkgate Quarry and a particular impressive outcrop to reach a car park. From here the long and gradual descent into the Wharfe valley begins. We keep ahead along a track to Chevin Forest Park information board at Miller gate, pass beside the gate and continue downhill along a track (Miller Lane) to a road. At this point we will have to rely on Mr J lord who will have been provided with the route plan for the rest of this walk (by LEADER), as there is no more room for full details, as John Whipp would like!

ANY FRIENDS OR FAMILY CAN JOIN THIS BRILLIANT BAND OF PEOPLE ON THE DAY AT THE SAID TIME. PLEASE INFORM LEADER OF ANY INTAKES!

A more challenging walk which may be longer and/or over more rugged terrain often with some stiff climbs. The start will be taken at a leisurely pace so as to make sure that ALL those who wish to complete the hike will do so. PLEASE take note of "ANDYS AMBLING ADVICE" and ensure that warm and waterproof clothing is/are taken in case of any change in the weather.
