The Twenty-fourth of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday December 18th 2004. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the Village of Harewood. Car parking is limited in the village so if you cannot find parking there leave the village and from the traffic lights take the A658 and park in the first lay-by on the left, approx 46 metres from the village. The hike is approximately 6/6.5 miles long and will take about 2.5 to 3 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a sandwich and a drink at a nearby public house when the hike is completed where people can decide if they wish to visit Harewood House itself. If we are LUCKY Mr Lord will give us a guided tour around the House and its grounds.
| From the lay-by we walk away from the village of Harewood, cross the road and take the access track to New Laithe Farm. Keeping left of the farm buildings continue on a grassy track heading into the valley bottom. Proceed through two gates and bear half left up a field towards Hollin Hall. Keep left of the buildings to pass Hollin Hall Pond. Beyond the pond continue through a gate following the track skirting woodland before climbing uphill on a field edge path with a hedge to our left. Pass through two gates where the path is now enclosed on both sides. Bear right at the top of the hill where the walking gets easier on a level enclosed sandy path, you have now joined the Leeds Country Way. Keep straight ahead skirting woodland to emerge at a road; bear right here to arrive at the main A61 Cross the road to enter the Harewood Estate through the right hand gate. Follow the broad track ahead through the parkland where you will see views of Harewood House to the right. Enter woodland through a gate bearing immediately left after a stone bridge. Bear right after 91 metres where the track forks and at a crossing of tracks bear right again. Its downhill now and at the next two forks first keep right and then left at the second where we will then pass a farm. Follow the good track down to the lake continuing through a gate keeping left of a high brick wall. Walk uphill to join a metalled access road to the left. Walk down past a house keeping straight ahead at the crossroads. Cross a bridge and follow the lane up to a gate soon passing Home Farm (no we are not on Emmerdale!). We follow the road through pastureland until we come to the village of Harewood. Cross the main A61 and walk for 46Metres to take a metalled drive immediately before the Harewood Arms. Pass maltkiln House, keeping straight ahead through a gate, as the road becomes a track. Views of Lower Wharfedale can be seen before we cross a stile by a gate and then another stile in the fence on our right and follow the field path back to your car. ENJOY! |
