The Twenty-third of our "Hubberton Hikers Hikes" is now scheduled for Saturday November 20th 2004. The hike is planned to start at 11am from the Crown Bottom car park, which is a pay and display, (don't forget to bring change with you). The car park is situated just off the main Huddersfield Road and is well sign posted, (P). The hike is approximately 4/5 miles long and will take about 2.5 to 3 hours at a gentle pace. It is planned to have a sandwich and a drink at either Compo's Café or a nearby public house when the hike is completed. If we are LUCKY Mr Lord will give us a guided tour around the various "Last Of The Summer Wine" film locations?

The walk will be in the region of 4/5 miles and will start from the Crown bottom car
park. We turn right along Huddersfield Road for 91 metres before bearing left opposite
the Fire Station, up Wood Lane. The road soon narrows to a steep track. We keep left
of a house and proceed through a gate, to continue on a walled path. At the top of the
hill we join a farm track and 91 metres before a cottage ahead we go over a wall stile
on the left. We then follow the field path before emerging between houses in the
village of Upperthong. In Upperthong we will have the chance to see Compo's grave.
After the visit to the Graveyard, we leave the village descending into the Holme Valley
with some tremendous views opening up in front of us. We then continue along the road
for 138 metres we take a right and follow the cinder track down past Newlands Farm to
meet a road. We cross over and follow various paths to Lower Hogley Farm where we keep
right going past houses until we come to a stile. We go over the stile and cross the
fields following our noses until we come to the river. We cross the river via the metal
footbridge and follow the riverside path. The path then veers right through pasture and
woodland emerging onto a field path where we climb two more stiles before emerging on the
road that takes us back to the Car Park. Please ENJOY your walk.
